Paralysed Man Takes a Walk in Virtual World....

A paralysed man using only his brain waves has been able to manipulate a virtual Internet character, Japanese researchers said Monday, calling it a world first.

The 41-year-old patient used his imagination to make his character take a walk and chat to another virtual person on the popular Second Life website.

The patient, who has suffered paralysis for more than 30 years, can barely bend his fingers due to a progressive muscle disease so cannot use a mouse or keyboard in the traditional way.

In the experiment, he wore headgear with three electrodes monitoring brain waves related to his hands and legs. Even though he cannot move his legs, he imagined that his character was walking.

He was then able to have a conversation with the other character using an attached microphone, said the researchers at Japan's Keio University.

It is the first time a paralysis patient has succeeded in meeting a person and having a conversation in an Internet virtual world, they added.

Researchers are now studying a system that would let patients create text messages by mentally selecting certain letters, said Junichi Ushiba, associate professor at the biosciences and informatics department of Keio Universty's Faculty of Science and Technology.

"In the near future, they would be able to stroll through Second Life shopping malls with their brain waves... and click to make a purchase," Ushiba said.

Second Life is an increasingly popular virtual world in which people -- and animals -- are represented by animated avatars and do everything from social activities to shopping.

Ushiba says Second Life could motivate patients with severe paralysis, who are often too depressed to undergo rehabilitation.

While Malayalam hit 'Katha Parayumpol' gets changed into 'Kuselan' in Tamil, a lot of things in the original are going to change in the remake.

The most important one, according to the latest reports, is that the humble barber's role that Srinivasan played in 'Katha Parayumpol' will now get changed into that of a bus conductor.

P.Vasu and Rajini fears that the barber’s role may offend Tamil population and hence the change.

‘Kuselan’ will give more screen space to Rajini than that Mammootty had in the original.

The film will also feature five songs while the original just had two, one filmed around Mammootty and other, a group song filmed around Sreenivasan. Even though the basic storyline remains the same, the Tamil version altogether will have a different look.

Rajini and P Vasu is taking even steps to inform Sreenivasan, about every change that they are making in the scripts of the remake.

Sreenivasan on the other hand maintains that every changes made in the script are justified as long as the plot remains intact.

The 58th International Film Festival Berlinale was in Berlin on Thursday, February 7, 2008, along with the 38th International Film Festival. Many films from various countries and various languages competed for being screened at this prestigious film festival.

Out of these 136 films were selected to be screened. Director Ameer’s ‘Paruthi Veeran’ directly entered the list and Shah Rukh Khan’s 2007 blockbuster ‘Om Shanthi Om’ got a special screening.

The Berlin film festival is held for 10 days, during which ‘Paruthi Veeran’ was screened for the first five days. In the five days that this picture was screened, the first two days it was screened with German sub-titles and during the next three days with English.

There was a special screening for the international press too, which consisted of journos from around the world. The Berlin film festival jury felt that Paruthi Veeran was one of the best films representing India.

The director of this film Ameer has flown to Berlin this morning to take part in the Berlin film fest.

Soundarya Rajinikanth's Ocher studio started its production campaign in style with the costly project 'Sultan The Warrior' which is the first of its kind of an animation feature film featuring a fully 3D animated version of an Indian film superstar.

Rahul Krishnakumar Vaid's is a case in point. The 22-year-old IT professional from Gurgaon, Haryana, has been arrested by the cyber crime cell of the Pune police for posting obscene, derogatory content about Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi on Google's social networking Web site Orkut.

Vaid was charged under Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act for posting vulgar content about Sonia Gandhi on an Orkut community titled "I hate Soniya Gandhi". The post was first seen by one Amol Bhokare, a 28-year-old Congress activist from Pune, who lodged a complaint with the Deccan Gymkhana police station in December last year.

Investigations revealed the IP address of the person who posted the message to be rahulvaidindia@gmail.com leading the Pune police to one Rahul Vaid from Chakarpur, Gurgaon city, Haryana. Vaid, an employee with Gurgaon-based 'PC Solutions' was nabbed by the police on Friday last week. He admitted to having posted the derogatory message on Orkut though he said he didn't think it would lead to a police case. Vaid was produced before the Shivajinagar court on Saturday, and has been remanded to police custody till May 21. If proven guilty, he could face imprisonment for up to five years and a fine to the tune of Rs 1 lakh.

Meanwhile, the perpetrator of the "I hate Soniya Gandhi" community on Orkut walks a free man (or woman); hating Sonia Gandhi is his/her personal opinion and having a personal opinion about someone, anyone, is not an offence as per the law.

Ajith, a school dropout became a race-driver. But after two accidents, he had to give up speed driving and ended up as a salesman in a garment export firm. Then he set up his own business, which also failed to take off. It was his modeling career that got him a few film offers.

Ajith with his clean cut good looks found the going hard, as his films did not do well. The Tamil film industry wrote him off, they said he had typical Aryan looks and only those with Dravidian looks have proved successful. He tried his luck one last time with Agathian's KATHAL KOTTAI, which not only won a national award, but was also a super-hit at the box-office.

But the problem for Ajith was that he was too immature to handle the success of KATHAL KOTTAI, which resulted in a string of flops. It was at this time his best friend decided to make a different movie with him with a young director Surya. They rehashed DARR and BAAZIGAR and the result was VALEE, released in May 1999, a month after Rajnikanth's PADAYAPPA. VALEE was a mega hit, that overnight made Ajith a superstar.

VALEE was followed by AMARKALAM where he was paired for the first time with Shalini. AMARKALAM not only become a super hit, but also he fell in love with its heroine Shalini, who became his wife after a breezy romance. The marriage has stabilized Ajith, who had earlier a wild womanizer reputation. In fact he was living with his KATHAL KOTTAI second heroine Heera Rajagopal.

Recently, Ajith told a friend: "I have been immature and made many blunders in my life. But Shalu (Shalini) has stabilized my life and I am having a good life now." He is very possessive about Shalini and has sworn that she will never act again. Ajith admits that he does not like his wife to continue acting. He has a point because there can't be two celebrities under the same roof.

There is no need for Shalini to act again, because Ajith is doing really well and is one of the few actors who gets over a crore per film and that too in Tamil. Ajith's KANDUKONDAIN KANDUKONDAIN, where he had a cameo role has been appreciated even in Mumbai and northern India where they will never accept a Dravidian hero. Ace cinematographer Santosh Sivan has just completed a schedule with him for his magnum opus ASHOKA THE GREAT, where he plays Shah Rukh Khan's younger brother. King Khan was so impressed with Ajith that he as the producer asked Sivan to extend Ajith's role.

But Ajith has no illusions about Bollywood. For the moment he is preoccupied with Tamil films. Releasing this Pongal is DHEENA, an action movie where he plays a rowdy. This will be followed by CITIZEN, where he plays nine roles. At the moment he is riding a waver, after Rajnikant and Kamal Hassan he has the best initial at the box-office. It looks like he is going to occupy the top slot for quite some time to come.

I have just returned from the most amazing and wonderful trip to Chennai, India, where I went to attend the audio launch of Oscar Films’ upcoming movie Dasavatharam.

I should tell you that Oscar Films is responsible for distributing my films in India and they are very old friends of mine. A few months ago, Mr. Ramesh Babu from Oscar Films and Mr. Vikram Lamba, brother of my Myth screen companion Mallika Sherawat, came to Hong Kong to personally invite me to this function. At the time, I looked at my schedule and winced. I was booked almost every day in April in Beijing, doing public service announcements and other events for the Olympics. How in the world would I fit in a trip to India? But I was so touched by their sincerity, and missed India so much (it’s been three years since The Myth) that I shifted things around so that I could squeeze in a very short trip.

As I told you, the purpose of the Chennai trip was to attend the music launch of Oscar Films’ latest production, Dasavatharam. In Indian films, the music is a very important part of the production, and these events are quite extravagant. The organizers had also added a fund-raising element to it, and I was there to present a check to the charity organizers.

Oscar Films was extremely generous in providing me with everything I could possibly need on this trip. Since I was only going to be in Chennai for about twenty-four hours, I didn’t think that anyone would know of my arrival and I was completely overwhelmed when I arrived at Chennai airport. So many fans and friends came to greet me, and it was at that moment I knew this would be the beginning of an amazing trip.

The premiere event was incredible. I saw so many friendly people, and so many famous faces! Many stars of Indian cinema were there and I recognized their faces, but I didn’t know how to pronounce their names (you know I’m much better with faces than with names). I was surprised and happy that so many people seemed to know me and wanted to talk to me. Oscar Films obviously did a great job promoting and distributing my previous films! I was really overwhelmed and I did my best to talk to as many people as possible. I hope I didn’t offend anyone by not giving them enough attention.

The movie, Dasavatharam, is truly a sight to behold. The story, directing, acting, camera work, special effects, everything about it is amazing. It really opened my eyes to modern Indian cinema. Of course I had seen Indian films before; I admire many of the actors, and really like the music and dancing. But this movie is really something else. Every element was amazing to me; and all the elements together just made a perfect and incredible movie! I won’t spoil anyone’s surprise by revealing the story now, since I think everyone should watch this movie. Because of my busy schedule, I had to leave Chennai the same night, after the event ended. I arrived in Beijing early the next morning and imagine my surprise when I was greeted with, “We heard it didn’t go too well; are you okay?” I honestly had no idea what everyone was talking about. I’d had such a thrilling and interesting trip and everything had gone quite smoothly.

I have nothing but respect for Indian culture and Indian cinema, and even though I may not know all the stars by name or how to properly pronounce the names of the ones I do know, this has nothing to do with my admiration for them. And saying that I won’t eat Indian food! Nothing could be further from the truth; I adore Indian food, and in fact had two excellent meals on this trip and was so full I could barely leave my seat!

While I am on the topic of irresponsible journalism, some reporters recently asked me about my participation in the Olympic torch relay. I jokingly answered that no one had better try to come near me while I’m carrying the torch. I said it as a joke, and believe me, I made it quite clear that I was fooling around. I have tremendous faith in the security measures being taken. The next day there were news reports all over the world saying things like “Jackie Chan Threatens Olympic Protestors” and “Kung Fu Star Will Chop Down Protestors.” It seems that everywhere in the world there will be rotten apples that spoil the good ones in the barrel.

I hope this has cleared things up and that my gracious and generous Indian hosts and all of my fans and friends will be reassured that I had a lovely and memorable trip.

A remake of Malayalam blockbuster Kadhaparayumbol, it is said that the distribution rights of Kuselan had been acquired by corporate player Pyramid Saimira for a record price of Rs 65 crore.

According to reports, after camping more than a month in Ramoji Rao Film City in Hyderabad, the cast and crew of Rajinikanth-starrer Kuselan is now canning the climax scene of the film in Coimbatore.

Rajni and director P Vasu reached Coimbatore last evening. It is said that the crucial scene is currently being shot in a school at Udumalaipet near the industrial city.

MUMBAI, May 12 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee may ease on Monday as record high oil prices reinforce concerns about a widening trade deficit and a weakening stock market raises worries that foreigners may withdraw some capital.

* The partially convertible rupee ended at 41.60/61 per dollar on Friday, 0.4 percent stronger than its previous close of 41.76/77. It lost 2.3 percent on the week.

* Oil CLc1 has hit record highs above $126 a barrel. [O/R]. India imports 70 percent of its oil and refiners are among the biggest buyers of dollars in the local market.

* The trade deficit had widened 35.5 percent to $80.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March, largely due to soaring oil prices.

Yahoo! has unveiled Glue Pages Beta on Yahoo! India Search; a new style of search result, similar to Google's Universal Search system. The new pages replace the usual text list with a broad and visual selection of news articles, videos, images, Wikipedia entries and more along with the standard search results.

Glue Pages offer a more visual result than the standard Yahoo! results page, though the option to use the standard pages is still available, and they aim to produce a more natural search experience for the user. By combining a selection of results, Glue Pages offer enough information for quick fact checking and as well as a large base from which to expand your search.

A result for a celebrity or public figure, such as George W Bush, returns a short biography from Wikipedia, and selection of images, videos and Yahoo! Answers, while a search for diabetes has several encyclopaedia entries as well as news, blogs and Yahoo! Groups.

At the moment Yahoo Glue only works with certain categories (sports, travel, entertainment, health, finance and technology) where the topic is broad enough to have many results from a wide range of sources, and there is some diversity in the layout of the as well as the content. For example, the result pages for a search for "diabetes" and "George W Bush" look quite different.

It is expected that Yahoo! will roll out this feature across their other sites throughout the year - so look out for a new (sticky) image search application in town.

Bharti Airtel, India’s leading mobile operator, has made a multibillion-dollar bid for control of Johannesburg-listed MTN, a powerful player in Africa and the Middle East, that would make it one of the biggest beasts of emerging markets telecoms.

Insiders told the Financial Times that the Indian operator tabled an indicative bid for 51% of the equity of MTN at about R165/share, which would value the SA company’s entire equity at around $37bn, for which it had secured $12bn of financing from Goldman Sachs and Standard Chartered.

MTN’s shares have risen sharply since April 25 when the FT revealed that the Indian operator was considering an offer for the flagship SA company, a report that initially drew sharp denials from senior Bharti executives.

The two investment banks have each pledged to underwrite $6bn of the amount that Bharti will need to purchase the controlling stake, people close to the situation said. Bharti is expected to fund the balance with an issue of equity, either directly to MTN shareholders or to institutions.

Speaking to the FT on Monday night, Sunil Bharti Mittal said: “We’re delighted that they’ve chosen to talk to us. It confirms Airtel’s standing in global telecoms, but whether it will lead to anything, I don’t know.”

Mittal denied that Bharti Airtel would have any difficulty in choppy capital markets raising the funds required for a bid on this scale, saying: “I have been overwhelmed by the kind of response we have had from the banks.”

Merrill Lynch and Deutsche Bank are advising MTN, while Bharti is being advised by Standard Chartered. Singtel, which owns 30,5% of Bharti, is being advised by Goldman Sachs.

Motivating Bharti’s approach to MTN is the idea of creating the premier emerging market telecoms group. But it is unlikely to have a free run, with Reliance Communications, Vodafone and China Mobile all likely to be assessing their options.

In a reversal of its repeated previous denials, Bharti said on Monday that it had entered into an “exploratory discussion” with MTM that was at an early stage and might or might not lead to any transaction.

People close to the situation say MTN’s board has yet to grant Bharti exclusive access to its books and is holding out for an offer of nearer R180/share.

Microsoft CEO stands by bid for Yahoo

Microsoft Corp. is standing by its $44 billion bid for Yahoo Inc and will "move forward" if it is rejected, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said on Wednesday.

Microsoft, the world's biggest software company by market value, has made an unsolicited bid for Yahoo, a U.S. Internet media and advertising company. On Tuesday Yahoo released better than expected first-quarter results, leading to speculation Microsoft could alter its bid.

"We know what Yahoo is worth to us. We offered a lot of money: $44 billion, it is not a lot of euros anymore. If their board thinks that's fair, great. If not, we'll move forward," Ballmer said onstage after an address at an information technology event.

He did not explain what he meant by moving forward.

Ballmer later told a news conference, "Time is money. We made clear in the last letter we sent" to Yahoo's board. "We'll see what happens." Yahoo faces a Saturday deadline to respond to Microsoft, after which Microsoft has said it will launch a proxy battle to unseat Yahoo's board.

Microsoft wants to buy Yahoo to challenge Google Inc in online advertising.

Asked whether Microsoft could make a bid for Google, Ballmer said in part that he did not think the Internet company would be interested and a bid would raise regulatory issues.

Yahoo and Microsoft rank number two and three in Web search respectively and are at a stand-off. Microsoft has said its offer of $31 a share is fair, but Yahoo has said the cash-and-stock offer undervalues the company.

In the video game sector, Ballmer was asked if Microsoft planned to alter its Xbox prices in light of a cut in prices for its Xbox 360 video game console in Europe last month.

With his wealth estimated at more than $57 billion, Anil Dhirubhai Ambani has emerged as India's wealthiest citizen after the blockbuster IPO of his Reliance Power, and all indications are that he may jump to the top of the global rich list as well. The value of Anil's holdings in seven listed entities will be around Rs 229,363 crore or $57.
3 billion at last Friday's closing price, taking into account the price of a Reliance Power share at Rs 450 per share, the cut-off price of the public issue which closed on Friday. Market experts expect Reliance Power to list at a much higher value.
If the stock lists at Rs 900, Ambani will jump over Carlos Slim Helu, the Mexican telecom tycoon who topped last year's rich list with an estimated $67.8 billion to his account according to Forbes magazine.
At Rs 900 per share, Anil Ambani's personal wealth would be estimated at Rs 2,75,000 crore or $68.7 billion.Microsoft chairman Bill Gates followed Carlos Slim last year with an estimated wealth of $59.2 billion.
Anil's elder brother Mukesh Ambani, who runs the largest corporation in the country, Reliance Industries Ltd, which has a market cap of Rs 434,170 crore, will now slip to number two in the rich list. The value of his personal wealth is estimated at Rs 218,860 crore or $54.
7 billion as per the last closing price. Although much depends upon the market dynamics, experts feel that at least three Indians - the Ambani Brothers and steel baron Lakshmi Mittal - are expected to make in the top 10 richest.
